For this year in math class, we used a Connected Math Textbook instead of our regular text books. The skills were a lot more difficult because we have never used them before. In this year we completed six out of the 8 text books there were. We completed Prime Time, Bits and Pieces 1, and 2 and, Covering and Surrounding, How Likely Is It? And Shapes and Designs. There are four to five different investigations in each chapter and at least four to five lessons in that chapter. Each lesson has one point that it focuses on us learning. Each day we go over one or two different points or investigations. Then if we don’t finish the point or investigation that we are working on in class we have it for homework to complete it, and sometimes we have A.C.E homework to go along with the investigation homework that we didn’t finish. A.C.E is abbreviated for Applications, Connections, and Extensions. Also sometimes we go over the Reflections in class and will have to type them up for a grade next class. Each day we have homework we go over it the next class that we have to make sure every understands the point, investigation, or concept that we have previously learned. Here is an example of an actual page from Prime Time: Found from this site: http://www.amazon.com/Connected-Mathematics-Grade-Prime-Time/dp/0133661040
Everything that we worked on, including the things we worked on in school and for homework, we record in our notebooks. There are different sections in our notebook. One part that we have in our notebook is called “Class work”; this section has all the investigations or points that we worked on in class. The second part is called “Homework”; this section had all of the homework that our teacher assigned us. The third part is “Assessments”; this is where we keep all of the tests, quizzes and Reflection grades. The fourth par was called “Buddy”; this is where we keep phone numbers and emails of our friends so that we can call them if we need help on the lesson. The fifth part was called “Vocabulary”; this is where we kept our notebooks that we keep all or vocabulary in. The last part is called “Reference”; this is where all of our lab-sheets each book and investigation was kept so that we didn’t have to write stuff on the book. Also in our notebooks we have our book, pencil pouch, and assignment list where we can see what our homework is instead of going onto a computer and looking it up on Edline. The lab-sheets that we have in our “Reference” section in our binder are papers that either helps us, with a certain point in that chapter or they help us with homework for that night. Another reason why we have different sections is to draw conclusions to understand why the formulas and algorithms work. http://math-frolic.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
My favorite unit was Prime Time. I liked this unit because we learned a lot about prime and composite numbers. We also learned about factors and of multiples of numbers such as 24 or 12. We also learned how to use rectangles to represent the factor pairs of numbers. We also learned how to Recognize and use the fact that every whole number can be written in exactly one way as a product of prime numbers, use factors and multiples to solve problems and to explain some numerical facts of everyday life; and develop a variety of strategies for solving problems building models, making lists and tables, drawing diagrams, and solving simpler problems. All in all math is something that we are going to need to learn sooner or later, and if we let math into our bodies now, we will be better in the future.
